An American open-world action role-playing video game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks on September 20, 1996, for MS-DOS. It is the second installment in The Elder Scrolls series and a sequel to Arena. The game is set in the provinces of High Rock and Hammerfell, within the Iliac Bay region, where the player, as an unnamed agent of Emperor Uriel Septim VII, is tasked with investigating the haunting of King Lysandus's ghost and uncovering the fate of a missing imperial letter. Daggerfall offers an expansive open world featuring over 15,000 cities, towns, villages, dungeons, and other locations, as well as more than 750,000 NPCs with unique dialogues and quests. The gameplay includes a deep character creation system allowing players to choose or create custom classes, a skill system based on usage, and the ability to join various factions such as guilds, religious orders, and political organizations. Players can become vampires, werewolves, or wereboars, and acquire property and ships. The combat system utilizes mouse movements to determine attack direction and type. The narrative has seven different endings based on player choices, leading to an event known as the "Warp in the West," where all possible outcomes are considered canonical. The game received positive reviews for its scale, depth, and freedom, despite technical issues at launch. In 2009, it was released as freeware and made available for free download on Bethesda's official website.
