The Hunt for Red October

The 1990 American spy thriller directed by John McTiernan is based on Tom Clancy's 1984 novel of the same name. Set in November 1984, the film follows Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), a Lithuanian-born widower, who commandeers the USSR's newest nuclear submarine, the Red October, equipped with a revolutionary silent "caterpillar drive" that renders it nearly undetectable. Ramius plans to defect to the United States, prompting the Soviet Navy to launch a massive search to prevent the defection. The CIA, upon learning of the situation, assigns analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) to determine Ramius's true intentions. Ryan hypothesizes that Ramius intends to defect and travels to the USS Enterprise to convince the American military not to attack the submarine. Meanwhile, the Soviet fleet, including the submarine Konovalov commanded by Ramius's former student Captain Tupolev (Stellan Skarsgård), pursues the Red October. With the assistance of sonar technician Jonesy (Courtney B. Vance) aboard the American submarine Dallas, Ryan and Captain Mancuso (Scott Glenn) locate Ramius and help him fake the destruction of the Red October to conceal its defection. However, a saboteur disguised as a cook is discovered aboard, attempting to destroy the submarine. In a tense climax, Ramius, Ryan, and Mancuso neutralize the saboteur and successfully navigate the Red October into American waters. The film received positive critical acclaim, grossed over $200 million worldwide, and won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing.​
