The 2017 American fantasy action-adventure film directed by Alex Kurtzman serves as a reboot of the "Mummy" franchise and was intended to launch Universal's "Dark Universe." The story follows former U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), who, along with his partner Chris Vail (Jake Johnson), inadvertently discovers the ancient tomb of Egyptian princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) in Iraq. Ahmanet had been entombed alive for attempting to summon the god Set and seize power. During the transport of her sarcophagus to London, their plane crashes; Nick dies but mysteriously returns to life, realizing he has been chosen as a vessel for Set. Ahmanet escapes, regains her strength by turning people into zombies, and wreaks havoc. Nick teams up with archaeologist Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) and Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe), head of Prodigium, an organization dedicated to combating supernatural threats. Jekyll, battling his own dual identity as Mr. Hyde, plans to use Nick to destroy Set. In the climax, Nick sacrifices himself by stabbing the dagger with the ruby into his own chest, gaining Set's power to defeat Ahmanet. He then resurrects Jenny and disappears, leaving his ultimate fate ambiguous. Despite a significant marketing push and star-studded cast, the film received predominantly negative reviews and was a commercial disappointment, grossing $410 million against a budget estimated between $125 and $195 million, leading to the cancellation of further "Dark Universe" projects.
