A 1971 British horror film directed by Michael Winner, serving as a prequel to Henry James's novella "The Turn of the Screw". Set in a secluded country estate, the story follows orphaned siblings Flora (Verna Harvey) and Miles (Christopher Ellis) after the death of their parents. They are under the care of housekeeper Mrs. Grose (Thora Hird), governess Miss Jessel (Stephanie Beacham), and gardener Peter Quint (Marlon Brando). Quint, with his charismatic and unconventional demeanor, captivates the children, imparting his peculiar philosophies on life, love, and death. Despite her initial reservations, Miss Jessel becomes involved in a sadomasochistic relationship with Quint, which the children secretly observe and begin to emulate. When Mrs. Grose decides to inform their guardian about the inappropriate conduct, the children, desperate to keep Quint and Miss Jessel together, take drastic actions leading to the deaths of both adults. The film concludes with the arrival of a new governess (Anna Palk), setting the stage for the events depicted in "The Turn of the Screw".
