The Presidio

The 1988 American crime thriller directed by Peter Hyams follows the investigation of a murder at the Presidio Army base in San Francisco. Military Police officer Patti Jean Lynch (Jenette Goldstein) is shot dead while investigating a break-in, and two San Francisco Police Department officers are killed during the getaway. Detective Jay Austin (Mark Harmon), a former Military Police officer, is assigned to the case and clashes with Lieutenant Colonel Alan Caldwell (Sean Connery), the base's provost marshal. Their strained relationship stems from past conflicts when Austin was demoted after arresting an officer for drunk driving. Despite their differences, they team up to investigate, leading them to Arthur Peale (Mark Blum), a wealthy businessman with CIA ties and a military background in Vietnam. The investigation uncovers a diamond smuggling operation involving water bottles transported from the Philippines. It is revealed that former military personnel, including Sergeant Major Ross Maclure (Jack Warden), a close friend of Caldwell, are involved in the scheme. The final confrontation results in a shootout where Peale and his associates are killed, and Maclure is fatally wounded. The film concludes with a military funeral, where Caldwell delivers an emotional eulogy, and a reconciliation occurs between Caldwell and his daughter Donna (Meg Ryan), who has developed a romantic relationship with Austin. The film combines elements of crime thriller and drama, exploring themes of honor, loyalty, and redemption.​
