The 1985 American neo-noir crime thriller film, directed by Peter Weir, follows Philadelphia detective John Book (Harrison Ford) as he investigates a murder witnessed by eight-year-old Amish boy Samuel Lapp (Lukas Haas). When it's revealed that the killer is corrupt police officer James McFee (Danny Glover), Book takes Samuel and his widowed mother, Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis), into protective custody. After an attempt on his life, Book hides them in their Amish community in Pennsylvania, where he must also conceal himself. As Book recuperates, he assimilates into the Amish way of life, participating in a barn raising and developing a romantic connection with Rachel, causing tension with her suitor, Daniel Hochleitner (Alexander Godunov). When the corrupt officers locate Book, a climactic confrontation ensues, with the community's support leading to their defeat. The film delves into themes of cultural clash, love, and moral choices, highlighting the contrast between urban violence and the Amish's peaceful philosophy. The film drew eight Academy Award nominations, Best Picture among them, and Ford was up for Best Actor; two turned into wins: one for Best Original Screenplay, one for Best Film Editing.
