The 2024 Franco-British-American body horror film directed by Coralie Fargeat tells the story of aging Hollywood star Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), host of a morning aerobics TV show, who is fired on her fiftieth birthday due to her age. Facing a crisis, Elizabeth learns about an underground drug called "The Substance," capable of creating a younger version of herself. After taking the drug, she produces a young copy named Sue (Margaret Qualley). Sue quickly gains popularity, taking Elizabeth's place on television, while Elizabeth herself falls into despair. Tension arises between them, leading to destructive consequences as their bodies and identities begin to rapidly deteriorate. The film explores themes of aging, identity, and obsession with youth, offering viewers a deep and frightening look at the pursuit of eternal youth. It premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where Fargeat received the award for Best Screenplay.
