A 2012 American science fiction action film directed by Len Wiseman, with a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback, serves as a remake of the 1990 film of the same name and is based on Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." Set in a future where Earth is divided into the United Federation of Britain and the Colony (formerly Australia), the story follows Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), a factory worker plagued by recurring nightmares. Seeking relief, he visits Rekall, a company that implants artificial memories, but the procedure malfunctions, revealing that his current life is fabricated and he is actually Carl Hauser, a former agent working for the Resistance against the totalitarian Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston). Pursued by his wife Lori (Kate Beckinsale), who is revealed to be an agent, Quaid allies with Melina (Jessica Biel), a woman from his past, to thwart Cohaagen's plan to deploy synthetic soldiers to suppress the Colony. The film features intense action sequences, a dystopian atmosphere, and modern visual effects, reimagining the original narrative in a contemporary setting.
