The 2014 American fantasy comedy horror film directed by Mark Waters, with a screenplay by Daniel Waters, is based on the first novel of the same name by Richelle Mead. The story follows 17-year-old Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch), a Dhampir — half-human, half-vampire — training to become a guardian for her best friend, Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), a Moroi princess with magical abilities. After a year on the run, they return to St. Vladimir's Academy, where they face threats from within and outside the school. Lissa becomes the target of mysterious attacks: blood-written threats appear on her walls, and a memorial to her family explodes in the church. Initially suspecting classmate Mia Rinaldi (Sami Gayle), they eventually uncover that Victor Dashkov (Gabriel Byrne), suffering from an incurable disease, orchestrated the events to harness Lissa's rare spirit magic for his healing. Rose, who harbors feelings for her mentor Dimitri Belikov (Danila Kozlovsky), discovers that Lissa's spirit magic, while capable of healing, drains her life energy. The film culminates with Lissa's rescue and the revelation that Rose is "shadow-kissed," having been brought back to life by Lissa's magic. Blending elements of teen drama, mysticism, and humor, the film explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and self-discovery.
