The 2014 Russian fantasy adventure film, loosely based on the novella of the same name by Nikolai Gogol, significantly departs from the original story. Set in the early 18th century, the plot centers on English cartographer Jonathan Green (Jason Flemyng), who embarks on a scientific expedition to map uncharted Eastern European territories. During his journey, he stumbles upon a remote Ukrainian village shrouded in mystery and steeped in sinister folklore. There, he encounters eerie superstitions, undead creatures, and a terrifying witch with supernatural powers. As Jonathan’s rational worldview is challenged, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between good and evil, with an ancient demonic entity named Viy at its center. The film creates a gothic and suspenseful atmosphere, filled with dark fantasy elements, horror, and mythical beings. Stunning visual effects enhance the surreal and tense environment. Blending historical context with fantasy and horror, the film explores the protagonist’s internal transformation and confrontation with irrational fears.
