Vivarium

A 2019 surrealist science fiction horror film, co-produced by Ireland, Denmark, and Belgium, directed by Lorcan Finnegan. The film follows a young couple: primary school teacher Gemma (Imogen Poots) and her landscaper boyfriend Tom (Jesse Eisenberg), who are searching for the perfect home. They visit a real estate agency and meet an agent named Martin (Jonathan Aris), who suggests they view a house in a new suburban development called Yonder. Upon arrival, they find endless rows of identical houses. Martin shows them house number 9 and suddenly disappears. Attempting to leave, Gemma and Tom discover that all roads lead them back to house number 9, trapping them in the neighborhood. The next day, a box of supplies appears in front of the house. Tom decides to burn the house in an attempt to escape, but the next morning, they find it intact, along with another box containing an infant and a note: "Raise the child and be released." The child grows at an abnormal rate, reaching the size of a ten-year-old in 98 days. He mimics Gemma and Tom's behavior and emits piercing screams demanding attention. Tom begins digging a hole in the yard searching for an escape, gradually losing his sanity. Gemma tries to understand the nature of the child and their entrapment. As events unfold, tensions rise between the characters, leading to disturbing revelations about their situation. The film explores themes of parenthood, suburban monotony, and existential despair, blending elements of psychological thriller and science fiction.
