Volunteering

This is a form of socially beneficial activity based on unpaid assistance to individuals, communities, organizations, or initiatives, practiced in various forms and on multiple scales worldwide. The historical roots of volunteering lie in ancient societies where mutual aid and collectivism played key roles, but the modern volunteer movement began to take shape in the 18th–19th centuries in Europe and North America, particularly through religious and charitable initiatives. Volunteering includes participation in social, environmental, medical, educational, and humanitarian projects, ranging from helping in shelters and hospitals to participating in disaster relief and supporting marginalized groups. Significant milestones in the development of the practice are linked to World Wars I and II, when major international volunteer organizations like the Red Cross were established. In the 21st century, volunteering has become an essential component of civil society and is actively supported by governments, NGOs, and international institutions. With the rise of digital technologies, online volunteering has emerged, enabling people to contribute remotely.
