This is an ancient craft involving the creation of textiles by interlacing warp and weft threads, originating in the Neolithic era and independently developed across various cultures worldwide. Archaeological evidence indicates the existence of weaving around 7000 BCE in China, as well as in Mesopotamia and Egypt, where it played a significant role in daily life and religious ceremonies. Initially, simple vertical looms were used, eventually replaced by more complex horizontal structures. In medieval Europe, weaving became the foundation of the textile industry, particularly in the production of wool and linen fabrics, as well as imported silk and cotton from Asia. With the advent of industrialization in the 19th century, hand weaving gave way to mechanized production, leading to social upheavals such as the Silesian weavers' uprising, depicted in Gerhart Hauptmann's play "The Weavers." Despite this, traditional hand weaving persisted in folk cultures, especially in Russia, where it remained an integral part of domestic life, associated with rituals and beliefs, until the 20th century. Today, weaving encompasses both industrial production on automated looms and hand weaving used in decorative arts and crafts, such as the creation of tapestries, carpets, and artistic fabrics. Currently, there is a resurgence of interest in hand weaving, supported by enthusiasts, artists, and craftsmen dedicated to preserving and developing this unique cultural heritage.
