What We Did on Our Holiday

Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin directed this 2014 British comedy-drama. Doug (David Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike) are on the verge of divorce, yet they still head to the Scottish Highlands to celebrate the 75th birthday of Doug's father, Gordie (Billy Connolly). The three children come along too: Lottie, played by Emilia Jones; Mickey, played by Bobby Smalldridge; and Jess, played by Harriet Turnbull. To avoid upsetting Gordie, who is terminally ill with cancer, they pretend to be a happy family. However, their children innocently reveal family secrets to relatives. During the celebration, Gordie takes his grandchildren to the beach and shares his wish for a Viking-style funeral. Unexpectedly, he passes away, and the children, without informing the adults, honor his wish by sending his body out to sea on a makeshift raft. When the adults discover what happened, a scandal ensues, attracting police and social services. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the children's actions were motivated by love and respect for their grandfather. Ultimately, the family realizes the importance of honesty and understanding, leading Doug and Abi to reconcile for the sake of their children's well-being.
