The 1974 British-Irish-American science fiction film directed by John Boorman is a philosophical dystopia set in the year 2293. The world is divided into two castes: the mortal "Brutals," who inhabit a post-apocalyptic wasteland and worship a stone deity named Zardoz, and the immortal "Eternals," who reside in the secluded community of the Vortex, leading idle and stagnant lives. The protagonist, Zed (Sean Connery), is an Exterminator—an armed enforcer serving Zardoz to suppress the Brutals. He secretly infiltrates the Vortex, encountering Eternals such as Consuella (Charlotte Rampling), who seeks his destruction, and May (Sara Kestelman), who wishes to study him. Zed discovers that Zardoz is a fabrication created by Arthur Frayn (Niall Buggy) to control the Brutals and that he himself is the product of a selective breeding experiment aimed at producing a superhuman. Realizing the true nature of the Vortex and its governing artificial intelligence, the Tabernacle, Zed dismantles it, enabling the Exterminators to invade and end the Eternals' immortality. The film is notable for its visual symbolism, use of classical music including Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, and profound exploration of humanity, immortality, and societal stagnation.
