Swedish pop quartet formed in 1972 in Stockholm, consisting of two couples: Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, became one of the most successful musical acts in pop music history. Their name is an acronym derived from the first letters of the members' names. The group gained international fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the song "Waterloo," which became their first global hit. In the following years, ABBA released a series of successful albums and singles, including "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," "Take a Chance on Me," "Fernando," and "The Winner Takes It All," which topped charts worldwide. Their music combined elements of pop, disco, and Eurodisco, characterized by catchy melodies and harmonious vocals. The group sold over 400 million records globally, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. ABBA received numerous awards, including their Eurovision victory, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, and the BRIT Billion Award in 2023 for surpassing one billion streams in the UK. In 2024, all four members were appointed Commanders of the First Class of the Royal Order of Vasa for their outstanding contributions to Swedish and international music. After disbanding in 1982, the group reunited in 2021, releasing the album "Voyage" and launching the innovative "ABBA Voyage" show in London, featuring digital avatars of the members, allowing them to perform live again.
