Brewing

Is an ancient craft and technological practice of making beer — an alcoholic beverage produced through the fermentation of grain wort, most commonly from barley, with the addition of hops and yeast. Brewing originated over 7,000 years ago in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, where archaeological findings confirm widespread production and consumption of beer. In early societies, women were primarily responsible for brewing, often doing so in domestic settings. Over time, brewing spread worldwide, becoming a significant part of cultural, social, and economic life. In medieval Europe, brewing evolved into a monastic and guild-based practice, with monks and artisans improving fermentation and storage techniques. A major innovation was the addition of hops in the 10th–11th centuries in Germany, which gave beer its distinctive taste and extended shelf life. Today, there are numerous beer styles — lager, ale, stout, IPA, weizen, and more — each varying in flavor, color, density, and alcohol content. Modern brewing is divided into industrial and craft sectors, with craft brewing gaining popularity since the late 20th century for its focus on originality and manual processes. The brewing process includes malting, mashing, boiling with hops, cooling, fermentation, maturation, and filtration. The practice requires knowledge in microbiology, chemistry, engineering, and sensory evaluation. Beer has become not only a beverage but also a cultural, culinary, and festival element, celebrated at global events like the World Beer Cup and the European Beer Star, which honor the best brews from around the world.
