Today, home distilling is often practiced as a hobby, with enthusiasts using modern stills, reflux columns, thermometers, hydrometers, and filtration systems to produce clean and high-quality spirits. Homemade alcohol can serve as a base for infusions, liqueurs, fruit brandies, and other beverages. This practice requires understanding the chemical processes of fermentation and distillation, careful attention to safety, and knowledge of flavor and aroma profiles.
