David Frankel directed this American fantasy drama from 2016, working from a script by Allan Loeb. Will Smith plays Howard Inlet, a successful advertising executive in New York whose six-year-old daughter dies—a loss that sinks him into deep depression. In his grief, he writes letters to abstract concepts—Love, Time, and Death—expressing his anger and sorrow. Concerned about his mental state, his colleagues—Whit Yardshaw (Edward Norton), Claire Wilson (Kate Winslet), and Simon Scott (Michael Peña)—hire three actors: Amy (Keira Knightley) as Love, Raffi (Jacob Latimore) as Time, and Brigitte (Helen Mirren) as Death, to personally respond to Howard's letters. Their aim is either to help him cope with his grief or to prove his incompetence in managing the company. As the story unfolds, each colleague confronts their own personal struggles: Whit attempts to reconnect with his daughter, Claire faces fertility issues, and Simon hides a terminal illness. Howard finds solace in a support group where he meets Madeleine (Naomie Harris), a woman who has also lost her daughter. Gradually, he begins to understand that even in the darkest moments, there can be "collateral beauty"—unexpected moments of meaning and beauty. The film explores themes of grief, healing, and human connection. Despite its star-studded cast and profound themes, the film received predominantly negative reviews from critics but grossed approximately $88.5 million worldwide against a budget ranging from $36 to $40.3 million.
