Cube Zero

A 2004 Canadian science fiction psychological horror film, serving as the third installment in the "Cube" series and a prequel to the first film. Directed and written by Ernie Barbarash, "Cube Zero" differs from its predecessors by setting the action both inside and outside the Cube, providing viewers with a deeper understanding of the structure and purpose of this enigmatic construct. Wynn exhibits unusual abilities in predicting chess moves, hinting at his high intelligence. One day, they are ordered to record the dream of one of the inmates, Cassandra Rains (Stephanie Moore), who was captured by the military while walking with her daughter. Awakening in the Cube, Rains meets other inmates: Haskell (Martin Roach), Bartok (Mike "Nug" Nahrgang), Meyerhold (Richard McMillan), and Jellico (Tony Munch). None remember how they ended up in the Cube, but it is revealed that each had been convicted and agreed to participate in the experiment instead of serving their sentences. However, Rains' records are missing, raising suspicions. As the group progresses through the Cube, they encounter various deadly traps, resulting in the deaths of Bartok and Meyerhold. Meanwhile, Wynn and Dodd are ordered to perform a procedure on an inmate, Owen (Terri Hawkes), who has reached one of the Cube's exits. The procedure involves asking a question about belief in God; a negative answer leads to the inmate's destruction. Owen responds negatively and perishes. Wynn begins to question the system's humanity and decides to enter the Cube to help Rains. He discovers that Haskell is actually a warden controlling the inmates. Wynn and Rains attempt to escape but face numerous obstacles. Eventually, Rains manages to reach the surface, only to be captured and lobotomized, erasing her memories. Wynn is returned to the Cube as a new inmate. The film explores themes of morality, free will, and the nature of human control, revealing the grim aspects of totalitarian systems and human experimentation.
