A 2008 American science fiction film directed by Scott Derrickson, serving as a remake of the 1951 classic of the same name. The story follows the arrival of an extraterrestrial object on Earth, carrying a humanoid alien named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) and a massive robotic guardian, GORT. Klaatu comes with a mission that threatens humanity: advanced alien civilizations have decided to exterminate the human race in order to save the planet from its destructive activities. However, before executing the plan, Klaatu wishes to observe humanity and determine if they are capable of change. Captured by the military, Klaatu is treated as a potential threat rather than a diplomatic visitor. With the help of Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), an astrobiologist, Klaatu escapes and begins studying human nature firsthand. He witnesses fear, hostility, and aggression but also sees compassion, love, and self-sacrifice, particularly in the relationship between Helen and her stepson Jacob (Jaden Smith), who initially resents Klaatu. Meanwhile, GORT, originally designed as a protector, becomes a destructive force, replicating itself and eradicating anything in its path. As Klaatu gains a deeper understanding of humanity's potential, he chooses to sacrifice himself to stop the annihilation of Earth. In the end, the alien forces call off their attack but leave humanity without electricity, giving them a chance to change their ways. The film explores themes of ecology, morality, technology, and human nature, presenting an alien invasion not as a military conflict but as a dire warning about the consequences of mankind’s actions.
