Godzilla

This 1998 American science fiction film, directed by Roland Emmerich, serves as a reboot of the Godzilla franchise and is the first fully Hollywood-produced adaptation of the Japanese monster. The story begins with French nuclear tests in Polynesia leading to the mutation of a marine iguana into a colossal creature. Decades later, the monster emerges in New York City, causing widespread destruction and panic. Scientist Nick Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) discovers that the creature can reproduce asexually and has already laid hundreds of eggs in the city's underground. Alongside French agent Philippe Roaché (Jean Reno) and journalist Audrey Timmonds (Maria Pitillo), he strives to prevent the spread of Godzilla's offspring and save the city from total annihilation. The film combines elements of action and disaster genres, emphasizing large-scale destruction and visual effects. Despite its commercial success, the movie received negative reviews from critics for its weak script and departure from the original Godzilla portrayal. Subsequently, Japanese studio Toho renamed the monster version from this film as "Zilla" to distinguish it from the classic Godzilla.
