Kickboxer

A 1989 American martial arts film directed by David Worth. The story centers on brothers Kurt (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and Eric Sloane (Dennis Alexio), both professional kickboxers. Eric, as the reigning world champion, decides to travel to Thailand to challenge the undefeated local fighter, Tong Po (Michel Qissi). Despite Kurt's warnings about Tong Po's brutality and strength, Eric enters the ring and suffers a devastating defeat, resulting in severe injuries that leave him paralyzed. Shaken by the incident, Kurt vows to seek revenge for his brother. He seeks assistance from Vietnam War veteran Winston Taylor (Haskell V. Anderson III), who introduces him to the Muay Thai master Xian Chow (Dennis Chan). Xian agrees to train Kurt, subjecting him to rigorous and grueling exercises aimed at building strength, endurance, and fighting spirit. During his training, Kurt grows close to Xian's niece, Mylee (Rochelle Ashana), and a romantic relationship develops between them. As Kurt progresses in his martial arts skills, local crime lords associated with Tong Po begin to see him as a threat. They kidnap Mylee and Eric, demanding that Kurt throw the fight against Tong Po. Despite the pressure, Kurt enters the match, which follows ancient traditions: the fighters' hands are wrapped in ropes dipped in resin and coated with broken glass. In the course of a brutal and intense battle, Kurt, overcoming pain and fear, recalls Xian's teachings and utilizes his acquired skills to defeat Tong Po, restoring his family's honor and avenging his brother. The film received acclaim for its dynamic fight scenes and became a cult classic in the martial arts genre, solidifying Jean-Claude Van Damme's status as an action movie star.
