Lionheart

A 1990 American martial arts film directed by Sheldon Lettich. The story follows Lyon Gaultier (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a French Foreign Legionnaire stationed in Djibouti, East Africa. Upon receiving news that his brother in Los Angeles has been severely injured in a failed drug deal, Lyon decides to desert the Legion to assist his brother's family. He travels to the United States, facing challenges in adapting and finding means to support his sister-in-law Hélène (Lisa Pelikan) and niece Nicole (Ashley Johnson). In search of income, Lyon meets Joshua (Harrison Page), who introduces him to the world of underground no-holds-barred fighting. Utilizing his combat skills, Lyon quickly earns a reputation as an unbeatable fighter. His success catches the attention of Cynthia (Deborah Rennard), a fight organizer who sees great profit potential in him. However, Lyon is solely focused on securing his brother's family's well-being and is uninterested in fame and fortune. Displeased with Lyon's refusal to partake in her schemes, Cynthia arranges a match against a formidable opponent, Attila (Abdel Qissi), known for his brutality and ruthlessness. Despite the risks, Lyon accepts the challenge to ensure financial stability for his family. In a tense battle, Lyon, overcoming pain and exhaustion, exhibits incredible determination and defeats Attila. The film received mixed reviews from critics but marked a significant milestone in Jean-Claude Van Damme's career, solidifying his status as an action star.
