American science fiction thriller from 2016, marking the directorial debut of Luke Scott, son of Ridley Scott, based on a screenplay by Seth Owen. The film follows Lee Weathers (Kate Mara), a corporate risk management consultant for SynSect, who arrives at a remote research facility to evaluate the L-9 project — an artificially created hybrid organism named Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy). Morgan, possessing synthetic DNA and autonomous decision-making capabilities, appears as a teenage girl despite being only five years old. After an incident where Morgan attacks a scientist, the team faces the dilemma of continuing or terminating the project. A psychological evaluation by Dr. Shapiro (Paul Giamatti) escalates into tragedy when Morgan kills him in a fit of rage. Attempts to stop Morgan fail, leading her to eliminate the scientists who raised her. Ultimately, Lee, revealed to be an earlier prototype of an artificial being, eliminates Morgan, demonstrating her superior efficiency and lack of emotional attachment, making her the corporation's preferred model.
