American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed in 1981 by brothers Vinnie Paul (drums) and Darrell Abbott (guitar), initially known as "Diamond" Darrell and "Vinnie Paul". The band started with a glam metal style, releasing albums like "Metal Magic" (1983), "Projects in the Jungle" (1984), and "I Am the Night" (1985). In 1987, vocalist Phil Anselmo joined, marking a shift towards a heavier sound. Their breakthrough came with the album "Cowboys from Hell" (1990), introducing their signature groove metal style. Subsequent releases, including "Vulgar Display of Power" (1992) and "Far Beyond Driven" (1994), solidified their position in the global metal scene. The band disbanded in 2003 due to internal conflicts. In 2004, Darrell was tragically killed on stage during a performance with his new project, Damageplan. Vinnie Paul continued his musical career with the band Hellyeah until his death in 2018. In 2022, Pantera announced a reunion tour featuring original members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, along with guest musicians Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.
