A British-New Zealand Western from 2015, directed by John Maclean in his directorial debut, the film follows 16-year-old Scottish aristocrat Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as he journeys across the American frontier in search of his beloved Rose Ross (Caren Pistorius), who fled with her father after a tragic incident in Scotland. Along the way, Jay hires the enigmatic Irish bounty hunter Silas Selleck (Michael Fassbender) for protection. Unbeknownst to Jay, Silas is aware of a bounty on Rose and her father's heads and plans to use Jay to locate them. Their journey is fraught with dangers, including attacks by Native Americans, encounters with other bounty hunters like Victor the Hawk (Edwin Wright), and confrontations with Silas's former gang led by Payne (Ben Mendelsohn). The film blends black humor, absurdity, and sudden violence to create a unique atmosphere. The climax unfolds in a bloody shootout on the prairie, where Rose, defending herself, accidentally fatally wounds Jay. Recognizing the boy's genuine feelings, Silas stays with Rose and the orphaned children, concluding the story on a melancholic note that reflects on the cost of love and innocence. The film was awarded the Sundance Institute's World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic and received critical acclaim for its visual aesthetics and original approach to the Western genre.
