The Four Feathers

The 2002 American-British war drama film directed by Shekhar Kapur is based on the 1902 novel of the same name by A. E. W. Mason. Set in 1884 during the British military campaign in Sudan, the story follows Harry Faversham (Heath Ledger), a young British officer who resigns his commission just before his regiment is deployed. His friends and fiancée, Ethne Eustace (Kate Hudson), interpret his resignation as cowardice and present him with four white feathers, symbols of shame. Determined to redeem his honor, Harry travels incognito to Sudan, disguising himself as a local to save his former comrades, including Jack Durrance (Wes Bentley), facing numerous challenges along the way. The film also features Djimon Hounsou as Abou Fatma and Michael Sheen as William Trench. Exploring themes of honor, friendship, sacrifice, and personal redemption against the backdrop of colonial warfare, the film showcases Robert Richardson's cinematography and James Horner's musical score. Despite these elements, it received mixed reviews from critics and failed to recoup its $35 million budget, grossing approximately $29 million worldwide.
