The Four Feathers

The 1939 British adventure film directed by Zoltan Korda is an adaptation of A.E.W. Mason's 1902 novel. Set in 1895, it follows young British Army officer Harry Faversham (John Clements), who, raised in a family with a strong military tradition, resigns his commission just before his regiment is deployed to Sudan. His friends and fiancée, Ethne Burroughs (June Duprez), interpret this as cowardice and present him with four white feathers, symbols of shame. Determined to redeem himself, Harry travels to Sudan, disguises himself as a mute local, and rescues his friends, including the blinded Captain John Durrance (Ralph Richardson), aiding British forces in the Battle of Omdurman. The film is noted for Georges Périnal's exceptional cinematography and Miklós Rózsa's musical score, was filmed in Technicolor, and received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of colonial warfare and its deep exploration of themes like honor and redemption. It is considered one of the best adaptations of the novel and was nominated for awards at both the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals.
