A 2009 American post-apocalyptic film directed by John Hillcoat, it is an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name. The story is set in a world devastated by a global catastrophe that has wiped out nearly all plant and animal life, forcing the remaining humans to fight for survival, often resorting to cannibalism. The film follows a father (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as they journey through a desolate landscape, hoping to reach the coast where they believe there may be a chance for a better life. Their path is fraught with deadly threats: they encounter ruthless bands of cannibals, endure hunger and freezing temperatures, yet persist, clinging to the last remnants of hope. Along the way, they meet a dying old man (Robert Duvall), whom they decide to help, and are robbed by a desperate thief (Michael Kenneth Williams). The protagonist’s wife (Charlize Theron) appears in flashbacks, representing lost hope and the tragedy of their world. The film explores profound themes of survival, fatherly love, and moral choices in a civilization that has collapsed.
