The Russia House

The 1990 American spy film directed by Fred Schepisi, with a screenplay by Tom Stoppard based on John le Carré's novel, is set during the period of perestroika in the Soviet Union. The story follows British publisher Bartholomew "Barley" Scott-Blair (Sean Connery), who receives a manuscript from Soviet physicist Yakov Efraimovich Saveleyev, known by the codename "Dante" (Klaus Maria Brandauer). The manuscript, detailing the state of the Soviet nuclear program, is intercepted by British intelligence, which, in collaboration with the CIA, recruits Barley to verify its authenticity. Lacking espionage experience, Barley agrees to participate after meeting Katya Orlova (Michelle Pfeiffer), a Moscow-based editor through whom he received the manuscript. A romantic relationship develops between them. As the operation unfolds, Barley realizes that Saveleyev is under KGB surveillance and decides to trade the intelligence agencies' list of questions for the freedom of Katya and her family. In the end, Barley returns to Lisbon, where he reunites with Katya and her relatives, who have arrived from the USSR to start a new life. The film stands out for its depiction of the end of the Cold War, focus on personal relationships and moral choices, and was among the first Western films shot on location in the Soviet Union.
