A supernatural horror film produced in 2001 in the United States and Canada under the direction of Steve Beck, it is a remake of the 1960 film of the same name. The plot follows widower Arthur Kriticos (Tony Shalhoub), who, after the death of his wife Jean (Kathryn Anderson), faces financial difficulties while raising his two children: daughter Kathy (Shannon Elizabeth) and son Bobby (Alec Roberts). Unexpectedly, the family receives news of an inheritance from Arthur's recently deceased uncle, the enigmatic collector Cyrus Kriticos (F. Murray Abraham). The inheritance includes a luxurious mansion constructed entirely of glass and adorned with mysterious Latin inscriptions. Along with his children and nanny Maggie (Rah Digga), Arthur moves into the new home, unaware of its sinister nature. During their exploration of the mansion, they are joined by Dennis Rafkin (Matthew Lillard), a former assistant to Cyrus with psychic abilities. Dennis warns the family that the house is actually a complex machine known as the "Ocularis Infernum," designed to contain and control twelve malevolent spirits that Cyrus had collected during his lifetime. Accidentally activating a hidden mechanism, the family releases the ghosts, including entities like the Jackal, the Hammer, and the Juggernaut, who begin to terrorize the inhabitants. In an attempt to save his children and understand the unfolding events, Arthur encounters Kalina Oretzia (Embeth Davidtz), an activist determined to free the imprisoned spirits. Kalina explains that to complete the machine's function, a thirteenth ghost is required, created through an act of pure love and self-sacrifice. Arthur realizes that he must become this ghost to save his children. In the film's climax, it is revealed that Cyrus faked his death and manipulated Arthur's family for his own ends. With Maggie's assistance, who disrupts the machine's operation, Arthur rescues his children, and Cyrus meets his demise within his own device. The freed spirits depart the house, and the family reunites, bidding farewell to Jean's spirit, who blesses them for their new life. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the impressive set design but criticized the lack of scares and complex plot. With a budget of $42 million, the film grossed approximately $68.5 million worldwide.
