The 2009 American supernatural horror thriller directed by Joel Schumacher and written by David Kajganich follows two brothers, Victor (Dominic Purcell) and Evan Marshall (Henry Cavill), who become entangled in a sinister occult experiment initiated by Nazis in 1936. That year, Professor Richard Wirth (Michael Fassbender), an occultist, arrives at the Wollner family's farm in West Virginia to study an ancient runestone. Wirth employs blood magic and rituals to achieve immortality, but the Wollners, realizing his true intentions, imprison him in their cellar, binding themselves to him through magic, which necessitates regular human sacrifices to maintain his confinement. In 2007, Victor, previously missing, returns home and convinces his brother to accompany him to the farm for revenge. The brothers confront Wirth, who escapes and begins a hunt, utilizing necromancy and blood magic. In the climax, Evan uses the bones of Wirth's ancestors to poison him, leading to his demise. However, before dying, Liese Wollner (Emma Booth) reveals that Wirth was only one of eight Nazi occultists sent to the U.S. The film delves into themes of occultism, immortality, and the consequences of Nazi experiments, blending elements of horror and thriller.
