An American science fiction action film released in 2009, the sequel to Transformers (2007) and the second installment in the franchise, directed by Michael Bay. The story takes place two years after the events of the first film. The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, continue to work with the U.S. military to eliminate the remaining Decepticons, but the government begins to question their presence. Meanwhile, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), preparing to start college, discovers that his mind has been imprinted with ancient symbols containing crucial information about the location of the energy source known as the Matrix of Leadership. This makes him a target of the Fallen, an ancient Decepticon who seeks to use the Matrix to activate a devastating weapon on Earth. The Decepticons revive Megatron (Hugo Weaving), who joins the Fallen in hunting Sam. Optimus Prime is killed while protecting Sam, forcing the Autobots and Sam’s allies—Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) and Leo Spitz (Ramon Rodriguez)—to search for a way to bring him back. They encounter Jetfire, an ancient Transformer, who helps them locate the Matrix. The final battle takes place in Egypt, where Sam manages to resurrect Optimus. Upgraded with Jetfire’s parts, Optimus destroys the Fallen and defeats Megatron. After the battle, the Autobots remain on Earth while Sam returns to his normal life. The film received negative reviews from critics for its weak script but was a box office success, grossing over $800 million.
