This is the practice of flying in aerostats, utilizing the lift generated by filling an envelope with hot air or light gas, allowing the apparatus to ascend into the atmosphere and move through the air. Ballooning originated in France in 1783, thanks to brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, who, as paper manufacturers, observed that hot air could lift light objects. Their first successful launch occurred on June 4, 1783, in the town of Annonay, where an unmanned balloon ascended to approximately 1,800 meters and remained aloft for 10 minutes. In September of the same year, they conducted a test flight with animals—a sheep, a duck, and a rooster—all of which returned safely. On November 21, 1783, the first free flight with humans took place: scientist Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and Marquis François Laurent d’Arlandes ascended to about 900 meters and traveled 9 kilometers over Paris in 25 minutes. This flight marked the beginning of manned aviation and was a significant milestone in the development of flight. In the following years, ballooning spread throughout Europe, becoming not only a scientific achievement but also a popular form of entertainment. The 19th century saw the advent of steerable airships, and the 20th century introduced sport and tourist balloon flights. Today, ballooning continues to evolve, combining elements of science, sport, and art.
