Russian rock band from Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), formed on September 29, 1985, by Vladimir Shakhrin and Vladimir Begunov. The band's name, "Chaif," is a neologism combining the words "chai" (tea) and "kaif" (pleasure), reflecting the informal atmosphere of their early rehearsals accompanied by tea drinking. In the early years, the group recorded magnetoalbums "Zhizn v rozovom dymu" and "Subbotnim vecherom v Sverdlovske," as well as studio albums "Dermontin" and "Dulya s makom," which brought them initial recognition. In 1988, the band received the first prize at the "Avrora" magazine competition for the albums "Dulya s makom" and "Dermontin." In the 1990s, Chaif became one of the leaders of the Russian rock scene, releasing albums such as "Ne beda" (1989), "Davai vernemsya" (1990), "Chetvyorty stul" (1991), "Deti gor" (1993), "Pust vse budet tak, kak ty zakhocesh" (1995), and "Realny mir" (1996). The song "17 let" became one of the band's most recognizable hits. In 1999, the group received the "Golden Gramophone" award for the song "Argentina-Jamaica 5:0." In 2001, they were awarded the "Ovation" prize for the best musical film "CHAIF. 15 years. Everything is just beginning," and in 2004, they received the Muz-TV award for their contribution to rock music. Chaif's musical style combines elements of rock and roll, blues rock, reggae, and singer-songwriter traditions, characterized by melodiousness and lyrical texts. The band actively tours, participates in festivals, and continues to release new albums, including "Slova na bumage" (2019) and "Simfonicheskie versii" (2023), remaining a significant phenomenon in Russian musical culture.
