The 1997 American science fiction drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis is based on Carl Sagan's 1985 novel of the same name. The protagonist, Dr. Eleanor "Ellie" Arroway (Jodie Foster), a SETI scientist, has dedicated her life to searching for extraterrestrial signals. After losing her parents in childhood, she became fascinated with astronomy and radio communication, leading her to work at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Facing skepticism from the scientific community and lack of funding, Ellie continues her research with support from billionaire S. R. Hadden (John Hurt). One day, she detects a repeating signal from the Vega system, containing a sequence of prime numbers, confirming its extraterrestrial origin. Further analysis reveals encoded schematics for constructing a complex machine, presumably for space travel. The international community unites to build the machine, despite debates and concerns. Ellie vies for the role of passenger, but Dr. David Drumlin (Tom Skerritt), a skeptic of her work, takes her place. After sabotage of the first machine, Hadden informs Ellie of a second one built in secret. Ellie embarks on a journey, encounters an alien entity taking the form of her father, and returns without physical evidence of her experience. Facing doubt and criticism, she remains steadfast in her beliefs and continues her quest for truth. The film explores themes of faith, science, and our place in the universe.
