Soviet and Russian rock band founded in the summer of 1980 in Ufa by Yuri Shevchuk, who serves as the band's leader, primary songwriter, and the only constant member. The band's name originates from the chemical compound DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), symbolizing the desire to cleanse society of social "parasites." In its early years, the band performed underground, playing rock and roll and rhythm and blues, facing pressure from authorities. In 1986, Shevchuk moved to Leningrad, where he formed a new lineup that brought DDT to the mainstream, performing at rock festivals in Shushary and Podolsk. In 1988, the first official album "I Received This Role" was released on the "Melodiya" label, featuring the best songs of the 1980s. In the 1990s, the band gained nationwide fame with songs like "What is Autumn," "Don't Shoot!," "Motherland," "Rain," "White River," and "Wind," reflecting the country's social and political realities. In 1998, the conceptual album "World Number Zero" was released, where the band experimented with industrial sounds and electronic music, attracting a new audience. In 2011, the album "Otherwise" was released, receiving acclaim from critics and listeners. Throughout its career, DDT has released over 20 studio albums, numerous live recordings and music videos, and has received various music awards and humanitarian honors for contributions to culture and charity. The band is known for its active civic stance, participation in charitable events, and performances supporting freedom of speech and human rights.
