Nautilus Pompilius

Soviet and Russian rock band founded in 1982 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) by students of the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute, Vyacheslav Butusov and Dmitry Umetsky. Initially named "Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves," the band was renamed "Nautilus Pompilius" in 1983 at the suggestion of sound engineer Andrei Makarov. Their debut album "Pereezd" was released in 1983, marking the beginning of an active period of development, lineup changes, and musical experimentation. Throughout its existence, the band explored various genres, including hard rock, new wave, post-punk, gothic rock, and art rock, securing a unique place in Russian rock history. The group gained significant popularity in the mid-1980s with landmark albums such as "Razluka" (1986), "Knyaz Tishiny" (1989), and "Titanic" (1994). Songs like "Skovannye Odnoy Tsepyu," "Ya Khochu Byt' S Toboy," "Progulki po Vode," and "Titanic" became anthems for a generation and remain relevant today. In 1997, following a farewell concert at the Russia Concert Hall, the band officially disbanded, but its influence on the Russian music scene remains substantial.
