Soviet rock band formed in 1981 in Leningrad by Viktor Tsoi and Aleksei Rybin. Initially named "Garin i Giperboloidy," the group soon adopted the name "Kino." In 1982, with support from Boris Grebenshchikov, they recorded their debut album "45," featuring musicians from the band "Aquarium." This album was notable for its use of drum machines and instruments like flute and cello, giving it a distinctive sound. Over the following years, the band released several significant albums, including "Nachalnik Kamchatki" (1984), "Eto ne lyubov" (1985), "Noch" (1986), "Gruppa krovi" (1988), and "Zvezda po imeni Solntse" (1989). Their music blended elements of post-punk, new wave, and Russian rock, with lyrics reflecting the social and political realities of the time. The band reached the height of their popularity in the late 1980s, drawing massive audiences and becoming a symbol of change in Soviet society. The tragic death of Viktor Tsoi in a car accident on August 15, 1990, led to the band's dissolution. Posthumously, the "Chyorny albom" (Black Album) was released in 1991, completed by the remaining members. In 2012, the band briefly reunited to record the song "Ataman," and in 2020, preparations began for concerts utilizing archival recordings of Tsoi's vocals. Kino's legacy continues to influence Russian musical culture, with their songs remaining relevant and cherished by generations of listeners.
