Zoopark

A Soviet and Russian rock band formed in Leningrad in 1981 by songwriter and guitarist Mike Naumenko, who became its leader, ideological core, and main composer. Zoopark emerged as one of the brightest representatives of the Leningrad rock scene, actively performing at rock clubs and festivals and creating music heavily influenced by Western rock and blues, especially Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and The Rolling Stones. The lyrics were marked by sharp irony, gritty realism, and urban poeticism, making the band popular among the intelligentsia and youth of the 1980s. Zoopark released several cult albums, including "Blues de Moscou" (1983), "Uyezdny Gorod N" (1984), and "Music for a Film" (1987), leaving a significant legacy in Russian rock history. Despite the lack of official recognition and limited vinyl releases, the band gained widespread popularity through tape recordings and live performances. After Mike Naumenko’s death in 1991, the band effectively ceased to exist, but its influence on Russian rock remains substantial, and its songs are still performed and revered by fans of the genre.
