An American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, formed in 2009 by vocalist Tyler Joseph, bassist Nick Thomas, and drummer Chris Salih. In 2011, Thomas and Salih departed, and drummer Josh Dun joined, forming the final duo lineup. They self-released their debut album "Twenty One Pilots" in 2009 and "Regional at Best" in 2011. In 2012, the band signed with Fueled by Ramen and released "Vessel" in 2013, gaining initial popularity. Worldwide recognition came with the album "Blurryface" (2015), featuring hits like "Stressed Out" and "Ride," the former earning a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. In 2016, their single "Heathens" was featured on the "Suicide Squad" soundtrack and achieved high chart positions. Subsequent albums include "Trench" (2018), "Scaled and Icy" (2021), and "Clancy" (2024), the latter concluding the conceptual series started with "Blurryface." Twenty One Pilots' music blends alternative rock, pop rock, indie pop, rap rock, and electropop, with lyrics often addressing mental health, doubt, and self-identity. The duo is known for energetic live performances and a dedicated fan base. Throughout their career, they have received over 40 awards and 150 nominations, including a Grammy Award.
