British music band formed in 1997 in London by vocalist and pianist Chris Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland while studying at University College London; they were joined by bassist Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion, and manager Phil Harvey, who is officially recognized as the fifth member. Initially performing under the names Big Fat Noises and Starfish, the band gained popularity with their debut album "Parachutes" (2000), featuring the hit "Yellow," which marked a turning point in their career and earned them the Brit Award for Best British Album and a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. Subsequent albums "A Rush of Blood to the Head" (2002) and "X&Y" (2005) solidified their success, while "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" (2008) brought them their first Grammy for Best Rock Album, with the title track becoming the first British single in the 21st century to simultaneously top the UK and US charts. The band continued to experiment with their sound in albums like "Mylo Xyloto" (2011), "Ghost Stories" (2014), "A Head Full of Dreams" (2015), and "Everyday Life" (2019). In 2021, they released "Music of the Spheres," featuring the hit "My Universe" with BTS, followed by "Moon Music" in 2024, produced by Max Martin and released on eco-friendly vinyl records. Coldplay is renowned for their large-scale concerts, including the "Music of the Spheres World Tour" (2022–2025), which became one of the most profitable in history, attracting over 11 million attendees and grossing over $1.2 billion. Despite criticism for their mellow sound, the band has received over 450 awards, including 7 Grammy Awards and multiple Brit Awards, and continues to be one of the most influential musical groups of the 21st century.
