American rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1991 by vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk. The group became known for their unique style, blending elements of hip-hop, heavy metal, punk rock, and funk, along with politically charged lyrics opposing authoritarianism, capitalism, and social injustice. Their debut album "Rage Against the Machine" (1992) achieved triple platinum certification in the U.S. and included hits like "Killing in the Name" and "Bullet in the Head". Subsequent albums "Evil Empire" (1996) and "The Battle of Los Angeles" (1999) also received critical acclaim and commercial success. In 2000, the band released a cover album "Renegades" and soon disbanded due to creative differences. Members continued their musical careers in other projects, including Audioslave and Prophets of Rage. In 2007, the group reunited for a series of concerts, and in 2019 announced a new tour, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Zack de la Rocha's injury. In 2023, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but in 2024, Brad Wilk announced that the group no longer plans to perform. Rage Against the Machine left a significant legacy in the music industry, combining aggressive sound with activism and social critique.
